Am in the middle of Peter Galison’s book “Einstein’s Clocks and Poincare’s Maps”. It is about how the needs of railroads, shipping, and other technologies contributed to the development of relativity. Recently read Simon Winchester’s book “The Perfectionists” about the development of precision engineering. Would recommend both.
